Art workers is a space for community and gathering, virtually we host many voices in the BIPOC creative community to tell their stories to inspire others in the arts. For its inaugural episode, Art workers welcomes Self Help Graphics and Arts Director of Curatorial Programs, Marvella Muro to share her story in beginning with the arts, her career and what inspires her to continue her work in community engagement and curating.
Marvella and I have known each other for almost a decade, first working at the USC Pacific Asia Museum and then becoming friends in the museum field in Los Angeles. She is an inspiring voice in the L.A. arts filed and works carefully with artists and the community to uplift voices. For art workers inaugural episode of the podcast, having Marvella in as my guest was a dream come true. She truly encompasses our mission and serves as an inspiration for current and future BIPOC folxs working in the arts.
About Marvella:
Marvella Muro is Director of Artistic, Curatorial, and Education Programs at Self Help Graphics and Art, spearheading the long-standing Professional Print Program, Barrio Mobile Art Studio, the Annual Day of the Dead celebration, and exhibitions. Since joining in 2019, the Beyond the Press artist-in-residence program was established for emerging or underrepresented artists, launched the Youth Committee and the Creative Lab partnership with the neighboring high school and produced city-wide art projects, including the short documentary about six street vendors during the pandemic. She is the curator of the upcoming exhibition Sinks: Places We Call Home for the Getty Foundation’s PST: Art x Science initiative highlighting the environmental contamination and impact in two communities of color in Los Angeles. She is dedicated to uplifting artists and bridging the gap between arts and the broader community by initiating access points for artistic expression.Â
Before joining SHG, she worked in the curatorial and education departments at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, concluding as the Community Engagement Manager, where she developed art programs with local community partners and artists in three communities of Los Angeles County. She holds a B.A. in Art History from Cal State University, Fullerton, and an M.A. in Arts Management from Goucher College in Maryland.
