My first job was as a gallery attendant at the Norton Simon Museum. I was 18 years old, nine months fresh out of graduating high school and in my second semester of college. At the interview, the head of security asked me why I wanted the job; and I replied that I just wanted to be surrounded by art all the time. That decision would impact the rest of my professional life.
Flash forward 22 years, and I am now the director of the communications department of two University art museums in Los Angeles. Through my current work, I’ve been lucky enough to work with art and the artists on a daily basis. My biggest pride and joy is that on top of being surrounded by art all the time, I also work with artists from underrepresented groups across Los Angeles and the country.
Through this work, I’ve had the privilege to be a guest speaker at the Getty Multi-Cultural Internship Seminars to share my own professional story in the arts. Speaking in front of 20-something undergraduates that have their entire professional lives ahead of them takes me back to my own beginnings and serves as a reminder that the steps I take pave the way for a new generation of artists and arts administrators.
art workers is a culmination of my professional experiences, and personal passions; amplifying the voices of BIPOC, underrepresented and diasporic artists in our communities. Through writings, monthly gatherings, the art workers website, and soon to be launched podcast, my intention is to actively work with artists, creatives and arts administrators from underrepresented group to act as a vessel facilitating connection, belonging and access to the arts for all. Welcome and stay tuned!
